1. What is the Immers-Ed Global Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where people come together to solve problems. Rather than weeks, collaboration and development of ideas is done over a short period of time. Historically, hackathons have involved mostly programmers. Today, we use this model to catalyze collaboration and create solutions across multiple disciplines.

2. What is the Oxford X-Reality Hub?

The Oxford X-Reality (OXR) Hub harnesses immersive technologies to tackle some of humanity’s greatest challenges: educational inequalities, big data, manufacturing optimisation and heritage preservation. We foster multidisciplinary collaboration and global cooperation between the University of Oxford, partner institutions, and industry leaders.

3. What is a Hackathon?

4. Can I apply if I don’t have a team?

Yes, you may apply as an individual. Based on your skills and background, we will match and invite you to join a team or other individuals who would most benefit from working with you.

5. Can I apply if I’m not a member of the University of Oxford?

Yes, we are accepting applications from academics and students from other universities all around the world, as well as industry professionals and developers.

6. What if I don’t know how to code or am not a developer?

Not a problem! The purpose of this hackathon is to bring people with different expertise together to collaborate.

7. Do I need any specialist equipment to take part?

You do not. You will need at least a working laptop/computer.

8. How do I apply?

9. How do I respond to one of the challenges?

To respond to a Challenge, you or your team will need to submit a project idea. During the application process, you will be asked which Challenge you are responding to and what your project idea is.

10. Are the events in person?

All events will be virtual for now.

11. How will the winners be decided?

Subject matter experts from University of Oxford, industry leaders, and other notable individuals will judge final projects to determine the winners.

12. Will there be prizes?

Yes, through the support of our partners we will provide prizes to our Challenge winners and the Hackathon winner. AWS have offered all participants AWS credit to support building their project on the cloud. The winning team will be offered $10,000 in credit, to cover AWS costs up to 2 years. Furthermore, business mentoring will be provided by the AWS start-up team which is made up of former start-up founders and venture capital investos.

13. A note on diversity, equity and inclusion

The hackathon is open to all regardless of gender, orientation, socioeconomic background, etc. We aim for diversity and welcome all.
